Juvenile charged in double stabbings at bar

Charlottesville Police responded to a multiple-stabbing incident in the parking lot of the Outback Lodge and Down Under Club, a bar and night club located at 917 Preston Avenue, early Saturday morning.

The victims were 22 and 26-year-old female Charlottesville residents, City Police Sgt. Steve Dillon said. Authorities have charged a 15-year-old female with felonious assault, according to Sgt. David Jones.

Dillon said the incident began as an argument in the Down Under Club, a night club located in the basement of the Outback Lodge. It finally escalated to a stabbing incident near the entrance of the club, he said.

After receiving a call around 1 a.m., several police units arrived at the scene within two to five minutes.

One of the victims is in stable condition at the University Medical Center after undergoing surgery for stab wounds to the chest, Dillon said. The other victim was treated for her injuries and released.

The juvenile suspect, who allegedly committed the assaults with a butterfly-style knife, is in custody at the Blue Ridge Detention Center.

A clear motive for the attack is unknown, Jones said.

According to Michael Lane, owner of the Outback Lodge and Down Under Club, an incident of this degree has not occurred in the area for the past 12 years.

Dillon said the department usually has police officers patrolling the area, adding that officers occasionally receive reports of disorders in the vicinity.

The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control may also play a role in this case, as there is a suspicion that the Down Under Club may have given the juvenile suspect alcohol prior to the incident, he said.

"We are going to contact ABC and advise them of this situation," Dillon said.

The case has been turned over to the Charlottesville Police investigations division. Though police said several people witnessed the event, their statements are not being released.
