Carl W. Smith, a major University contributor, recently retired from AMVEST, the company he started 44 years ago in Albemarle County.
Since his graduation from the University in 1951, Smith has donated more than $50 million to the University as well as other Charlottesville organizations.
"Carl Smith has been very generous with his time, expertise and resources for many years," said Leonard Sandridge, University executive vice president and chief operating officer. "He has always had the best interest of the University at heart."
Last year alone, Smith, along with his wife Hunter, donated $5 million to the Thomas Jefferson Foundation and $23.5 million to the University for a new performing arts center and the creation of the University's future 200-member marching band.
In 1997 Smith donated $25 million for the expansion of the University football stadium. Scott Stadium then became a part of the Carl Smith Center.
Smith started what was then Amerad Corporation in 1961, originally processing data for the U.S. Army's UNIVAC computer system.
AMVEST now works with finance as well as coal and natural gas production.
