Parents endow University Arts Program

Carl and Martha Linder, parents of fourth-year art history major and College student Blake Linder, donated $2.8 million in order to establish a permanent endowment at the University's McIntire Department of Art.

Specifically, the donation will boost the University's fine and performing arts programs, one of the University's long-term goals, University President John T. Casteen, III, said in a University press release.

The endowment will fund faculty and student study and research in the art history department, increase the department's use of digital technology, attract visiting scholars and provide training for art history students planning to study abroad, according to the release.

If the Board of Visitors provides its approval, an area of Grounds devoted to the art history department will be named the Carl H. and Martha S. Linder Center for Art History in appreciation of the Linder's gift.

"Support of this magnitude from parents is a tremendous vote of confidence in the academic experience at the University," Casteen said in the release. "We are grateful for what this gift provides and what it represents.
