The Recording Industry Association of America continued its efforts to stop illegal online music swapping by filing federal lawsuits against users of university computer networks across the nation Tuesday.
This round of lawsuits names 89 people with IP addresses from 21 different universities, including the University of Maryland at College Park, George Mason University, George Washington University, Georgetown University, Stanford University and University of California at Berkeley. The RIAA did not subpoena the University, according to Shirley Payne, ITC director for security coordination and internal affairs.
"It's important for everyone, including college students, to know that no one is immune from the consequences of distributing copyrighted music online," RIAA spokesperson Amanda Collins said.
Collins added the lawsuits against alleged file swappers will continue.
The RIAA filed 443 other lawsuits in addition to the suits against university students.
