University of California at Davis falsely notified 6,000 students by e-mail Monday that they had each been awarded a prestigious $7,500 merit scholarship, the Chronicle of Higher Education reported. UC-Davis officials alerted students three hours later that they had not won the scholarship but accepted for admission.
UC-Davis officials had intended to alert 800 students that they had won the university's Regents Scholarship but inadvertently sent the message to a different list of accepted students, the Chronicle said. The mistake prompted UC-Davis Chancellor Larry N. Vanderhoef to send an e-mail letter of apology to the students late Tuesday. Alumni, parents and several prospective students called in complaints as a result of the incident and the university's belated apology, according to the Chronicle.
