UJC elects Angela Carrico chairperson

The University Judiciary Committee elected its new Executive Committee last night, choosing third-year College student Angela Carrico to head up the Committee as chairperson next year.

"UJC has meant so much to me over the past three years, and this is just absolutely amazing that I'm now in a position to represent the Committee to the rest of the students," Carrico said. "Having seen the other three chairs, this is still kind of surreal."

In the past three years, Carrico served as a first-year judge and chair of the First-year Judiciary Committee. In addition, Carrico has served as senior counselor, summer office supervisor, co-coordinator of the reapportionment committee and Judiciary Committee representative to the Violence Prevention Committee.

Outgoing Committee Chair Alexis Gregorian praised Carrico for her dedication to the Committee.

"I have worked with Angela now for the past three years, and she is just an outstanding member of UJC," Gregorian said. "She loves this committee, and I know she'll devote all the hours necessary for it and be a great representative to the student body as a whole."

Carrico said she thinks the most important issue facing next year's Committee will be the question of extending the jurisdiction of some standards to all of Charlottesville and Albemarle County.

The Committee elected third-year Engineering student Amber Turner vice-chair for first years. Turner said working with Hoos Open to Preventing Eating Disorders for the past three years has given her valuable experience in working with first-year students.

"I'm excited -- I love working with first years," Turner said. "They're very eager to be at U.Va., so it's a lot of fun."

Third-year Commerce student Kristin Beahm was voted vice-chair for trials. Beahm served as a first-year judge, investigator and co-chairman of the fundraising committee.

Beahm said her personality lends itself well to the role.

"I'm very well organized, to the point that people make fun of me for it," Beahm said.

The Committee elected second-year Law student Scott Horton vice-chair for sanctions. Horton has been on the Committee for six years and most recently has served as chair of the Sexual Assault Board.

Carrico emphasized her dedication to the Committee and reaffirmed her desire to serve the University community.

"I love the UJC," Carrico said. "I will do everything in my power to make sure that the Committee is represented as best as possible, not only to the student body and U.Va. community, but also to the Charlottesville-Albemarle area and to any other areas the UJC may reach."
