University Global Health Center receives grant

The University Center for Global Health has received an $810,000 grant from the Ellison Medical Foundation to fund the center's fight against diseases, the University Health System announced Friday.

The foundation's three-year grant contains a two-year renewable option if the center demonstrates progress, according to a University press release. The Health System also said the University would provide matching support for the grant.

The grant money will be used to fund student and faculty work outside of the United States, allow visiting scholars to come to the University and also allow for the development of interdisciplinary courses and an international symposium on international health, the release said.

The center funds student research projects that allow students, including undergraduates, to travel abroad and complete their work. The center also sponsors post-doctoral fellowships for researchers from other countries to work for up to a year at the University.

The Ellison Medical Foundation, based in Bethesda, Maryland, and founded by Oracle CEO Lawrence J. Ellison, funds research in the areas of both global infectious diseases and aging.
