Yesterday was Tornado Preparedness Day in Virginia, as proclaimed by Gov. Mark Warner. A state-wide drill took place at 9:45 a.m. at schools, businesses and residences across Virginia.
Virginia's public schools are required to participate in some type of tornado drill at least once a year.
Students and school staff were required to move to safe areas inside the school, crouch down on the floor and cover their heads during the drill.
All National Weather Service offices serving Virginia issued the warning. The warning was then broadcast on television, radio stations and cable systems through the Emergency Alert System.
"At some schools they had mock injured students, and they coordinated with the local fire department to practice what they would do in an actual event," said Bob Spieldenner, director of public affairs for the Virginia Department of Emergency Management.
