Cavalier assistant women's basketball coach Audra Smith accepted the head women's coaching job at the University of Alabama-Birmingham on Wednesday. Smith, who has been with the Virginia women's basketball program for 15 years, will replace Jeannie Milling, who was fired after 17 seasons at UAB.
Smith was a player on three Virginia squads that went to the NCAA Final Four three consecutive years from 1990 to 1992. She joined Virginia head coach Debbie Ryan's staff in 1994 as a restricted earning coach, before becoming a full-time assistant after two seasons. In 2000 she was promoted to recruiting coordinator.
Smith returns to an area where she had a lot of success as a high school athlete. She was a star prep basketball player at Baldwin High School in Milledgeville, Ga. where her team won three consecutive Georgia AAAA championships from 1986-1988. Smith was awarded MVP honors in the 1987 tournament and Miss Georgia Basketball Honors in 1988.
