The NCAA granted the Big Ten Conference permission this year to use video replay to correct a missed or incorrect call by the official on the field. This system is different from the one used by the NFL because only a Big Ten official can initiate a review of a play and the coaches hold no power over the review.
These changes have not eliminated controversy over the system.
In last Saturday's game featuring Wisconsin and Central Florida, two plays were changed on review en route to Wisconsin's 34-6 victory. One review brought back a Wisconsin 50-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown. Another shortened a Wisconsin run from 22 to 21 yards. This last review took five minutes and, according to coaches and league officials in post-game interviews, disrupted the flow of the game.
The league has recommended to its officials in charge of review to use "common sense" when implementing the review and to only review a play if it is deemed to have a "discernable competitive impact on the game," Big Ten officials told ESPN.com.
