Student Health begins work with health Web site

The Elson Student Health Center has been collaborating with the National Library of Medicine's consumer health Web site, MedlinePlus, as a way to get more credible medical information to students. Allison Beaver, the assistant director of Health Promotion at Student Health, emphasized the need for reliable health information on the Internet.

"Students tend to Google health information and that's not a credible source," she said.

MedlinePlus is considered to be a reliable source used throughout Virginia, according to University officials.

MedlinePlus has also worked with other University groups in their collaboration on a project with the Health Sciences Library.

The Claude Moore Health Sciences Library at University in July was one of the recipients of the Consumer Health Information Recognition Award for Libraries in Virginia.

The library was recognized, along with 36 other libraries nationwide, for their work with MedlinePlus, according to a University press release.

MedlinePlus is "a trusted Web site for information on health for physicians and Virginia residents," said Linda Watson, associate dean and director of the Claude Moore Health Science Library.

MedlinePlus also is used to bring accurate information to Virginia physicians. The Health Sciences Library worked with MedlinePlus for over six months mobilizing and training more than 158 librarians on the Web site's services, Watson added.
