University named one of 50 best colleges for girls

The University was named one of the 50 "best colleges for girls" in the October issue of CosmoGIRL! magazine.

The magazine based its selections on opportunities the schools provide for women in athletics, academics and extracurricular areas.

Every school in the guide boasts small class sizes, prominent female faculty members, strong female athletic programs, an abundance of internship and leadership opportunities and highly involved alumni, according to a CosmoGIRL! press release.

Honor Committee Chair Meghan Sullivan agreed with the magazine's assessment.

"Due to the self-governance at the University, women are going to have a sense of empowerment," she said. "We have very strong role models in the faculty and strong guidance from upperclass women. There is a sense of community."

University Career Services "works very proactively to encourage women and minority students that they have career opportunities," UCS Associate Director Karen Knierim said.

"Everything we do is open to both genders," she said. "With almost every program and service we provide, we have more women participating than men, though."

The University appears on the magazine's list with schools such as the University of Michigan and the University of California at Berkeley. The University of Pennsylvania was the only Ivy League School that made the top 50. No all-girls schools were considered for the list.
