Rowing opens season at Boston regatta

Three Virginia boats finished in the top third of their races at the Head of the Charles Regatta last weekend held on the Charles River in Boston. The regatta was the first formal race for the Cavaliers this year, and the first competitive meet for the team's freshmen.

In the first race of their collegiate career, the members of Virginia's all-freshmen youth eight boat finished fourth of 20 teams in Boston. Last year's youth eight boat won its event at the Charles Regatta.

The Cavaliers' championship four squad paddled to sixth place in their event, and the championship eight squad rowed to sixth place in theirs. The crew was comprised of six seniors, one junior and five sophomores.

The annual Head of the Charles Regatta is attended by the top collegiate and professional teams from around the world. Virginia's boats will next hit the water on Nov. 6 in a home scrimmage against George Washington and Georgetown
