Recruitment of minority students is among the topics being considered at the annual meeting of the Association of American Medical Colleges, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education. The conference will take place through Wednesday in Boston.
The lack of diversity among medical professionals is resulting in "unconscionable health-care disparities" among patients from different backgrounds, the Chronicle reported association president Dr. Jordan J. Cohen told the thousands of medical educators gathered Sunday during the meeting.
A general lack of enthusiasm is a broader concern which other speakers at the association's meeting addressed, according to the Chronicle.
The rising cost of health-care, the demands of managed care and high expectations have put additional stress on those entering medical professions and has contributed to depression and burnout.
"A more hidden and profound crisis is the deep alienation and loss of meaning felt by many physicians," said Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen, a holistic medicine expert, as reported by the Chronicle.
