Several changes were made to city fire prevention codes last year that restrict certain natural Christmas tree displays in Charlottesville.
Natural trees are prohibited in buildings used for gathering of persons for the purpose of civic, social or religious functions. They are also prohibited anywhere that is used by six or more people at any one time for an educational purpose through the 12th grade, according to the Albemarle County Fire Marshall's Office.
In addition, the display of natural Christmas trees is prohibited anywhere that merchandise is displayed and sold, as well as in boarding houses, hotels, motels, dormitories, apartments, fraternity houses and sorority houses.
The only exception to these rules occurs when an automatic sprinkler system is located directly above the tree.
