University extends holiday hours for staff

As the holidays approach, University Academic Division employees will have an extra day off this year.

Following an extension of holiday hours by the Virginia Department of Human Resource Management, Chief Human Resources Officer Thomas Gausvik announced this month that Wednesday, Dec. 29 will be a holiday.

Previously, Monday, Dec. 27 and Tuesday, Dec. 28 were designated as Christmas holidays, and Thursday, Dec. 30 and Friday, Dec. 31 were New Year's holidays. The additional day gives employees the entire week off.

The Virginia DHRM change granted four additional hours each for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but the University combined all eight hours in order to make Dec. 29 a holiday. Besides the final week in December, holidays for University employees include Friday, Dec. 24 for Christmas Eve, and Nov. 25 and 26, the Thursday and Friday of Thanksgiving.
