Formal recruitment shows increase in participants

At the conclusion of this year's formal recruitment, the Inter-Sorority Council reported a substantial increase in bid acceptance.

"We were able to match substantially more women with chapters this year with the new quota total system," ISC Vice President for Recruitment Megan Frisk said.

ISC Recruitment Counselor Director Elena Knapper said ISC was happy with this year's recruitment, which began Jan. 17 and culminated yesterday with bid day.

"The ISC is very pleased with the way recruitment went this year," Knapper said.

Knapper added that they were satisfied with the new system, which computerized and streamlined the recruitment process.

"The new computer system we used to run the numbers worked out really well," ISC Assistant Recruitment Counselor Mo Scully said.

First-year College student Lydia Cuffman said she thinks recruitment went well.

"While the system has its flaws, I think the actual matching went pretty well," Cuffman said. "I think I wound up in the right place."

The Inter-Fraternity Council, which also is in the midst of formal recruitment, reported a large increase in numbers for this year's rush. Formal recruitment for men began last Thursday and ends Feb. 5.

While they do not have an exact number, IFC Chairman for Membership Intake Miles Clements said the total number of men exceeded 640. Last year, the number did not top 600. Clements attributed that increase to the IFC's efforts to attract a more diverse group of rushees.

"We are very satisfied with the way it has gone this year," Clements said. "We really made an effort to reach out to a lot of different groups."

Of the more than 600 men participating in this year's recruitment, two-thirds are expected to pledge a fraternity, according to IFC President David Bowman.

Last night began the first of three invite rounds, which followed three nights of open house last weekend. The invite rounds, which last three nights each, precede the last round of recruitment, final hours, scheduled for Feb. 4.

IFC bid day is scheduled for Feb. 5.

First-year College student Mark Greyson said he thinks the system is appropriate.

"I feel that rush is going fine so far," Greyson said.

Both the ISC and IFC have reported that no violations of recruitment policies have been filed for this year's recruitment.
