Rescue squad volunteer dies in helicopter crash

A University of Virginia graduate and local volunteer for the Charlottesville- Albermarle Rescue Squad died in the line of duty Jan. 10.

Nicole "Nikki" Kielar, 29, a flight paramedic for LifeEvac, was killed when the helicopter she was in crashed into the Potomac River.

Kielar began volunteering for CARS in 1996, while earning her BA from the College. After graduating in 1998, Kielar remained involved in CARS, and volunteered more than 6,000 hours. She began work for LifeEvac in 2003.

"Nikki gave willingly of her time and energy," CARS President David L. Starmer said in a statement yesterday. "Her passing leaves a void at this agency and in the lives of her friends and families that can not be filled. It is some small consolation to know she died doing what she loved -- in the service of others."

The cause of the crash is unknown and is under investigation.
