Increased police presence and adherence to party regulations contributed to a successful Bid Night Saturday, according to Inter-Fraternity and Inter-Sorority Council leaders.
"Everything went smoothly and everyone at the IFC was very excited about it," IFC President David Bowman said.
IFC members attributed the night's success in part to improved communication with the police.
"What made the difference this year was that we were working closely with the University Police Department," Party Patrol Vice President Brandon Early said. "We were talking a lot more with them, so we were all on the same page."
The University Police and the Charlottesville Police both said that nothing out of the ordinary happened in regards to Bid Night festivities.
General respect for rules and regulations as well as cooperation also contributed to the smoothness of Bid Night.
"We do not have any new rules in place, but I think a lot of it was attitude," Early said.
The behavior of Greek community members on Saturday night suggests that many understood the importance of the regulations for Bid Night.
"I think that people were more consistent in following the rules outlined by the ISC and the University," ISC President Courtney Cherry said.
For the most part, Bid Night is very similar to any other Saturday night.
"The only thing that sets Bid Night apart is that more houses are having functions, so there is a significant increase in the number of parties," IFC Public Relations Spokesperson Alex Berrang said. Because "everyone is used to having regular parties, there was no confusion in the regulations."
ISC contributed to the success of Bid Night with its New Member Program Saturday afternoon.
The program was designed to educate pledges about the safety and health resources available at the University, including Counseling and Psychological Services, the Alcohol & Drug Prevention Team, the Women's Health Center and HOPE, an eating disorder awareness resource.
"We purposely planned the new member program to coincide with bid night," ISC Educator Marah Wharton said.
Saturday's program drew a good turnout of new sorority members, ISC Public Relations Spokesperson Cameron Blair said.
"There was great attendance although it was not mandatory," Blair said of Saturday's program.
