School: College Year: Third Major: Foreign Affairs Hometown: Chicago Housing: Off Grounds, Wertland Commons Activities: Student Council, University Democrats Office: Student Council Vice-President for Organizations
What makes you a competent and qualified candidate?
I'm actually running for re-election for this position. I've spent the year working on a number of large projects, the most important of which was reforming the appropriations process to make sure it was fair and efficient for groups. I have hands-on experience with the job and intend to keep working hard for all CIOs.
In your opinion, what are the most pressing issues facing the University and how would you use your office to deal with them?
I think that some of the biggest issues facing U.Va. are: housing, sexual assault policy, safety, and, of course, diversity. As far as my office specifically, the new appropriations process lists cultural awareness and dialogue as one of the priorities for the student activities fund and will allow us to fund groups that meet or promote this need to the best of our ability. In regards to other problems, I've found sitting on the Student Council Executive Board is a great way to advocate for change.
How will you maintain contact with your constituency and ensure transparency in your actions?
One of the hardest parts of the VPO position is communicating with the over 500 groups we have here at U.Va.I've found the president's e-mail list is a great way to update groups.I've also found the Student Activity Center a great partner in communicating important information to groups. This year, while reforming the appropriations process, we had a number of open forums. I intend to make sure events like that keep happening when it comes to big changes for CIOs.
Why did you decide to run for office?
The main reason I decided to run for re-election was to finish the projects I started this year. I want to make sure the rolling part of the new appropriations process gets off to a smooth start.I also want to embark on new projects regarding fundraising for CIOs and transition workshops.
