College Week draws faculty, students

This week, the Arts & Sciences Council is sponsoring College Week, an annual week of free events for students in the College of Arts & Sciences.

Plans for College Week include academic events such as majors' fairs for the humanities and the sciences as well as social events including a student-faculty trivia night and the College Carnival.

"College Week is essentially a week of fun and interesting events designed to bring students and faculty together," Arts & Sciences Council President-elect David Reid said.

All of the College Week events are open to the entire University but are geared especially to students in the College.

"One of the purposes of College Week is to foster a unique identity within the University and to provide for the welfare of students in the College," said Eugenio Labadie, First and Second Years' Affairs chair.

College Week began Monday with Faculty Student Trivia Night at the Mellow Mushroom, when a team from the Jefferson Society placed first in the trivia contest.

"I thought Trivia Night went well," Labadie said. "All the students I talked to really enjoyed it."

Tuesday the Council held a Humanities and Arts Majors and Advising Fair in Newcomb Plaza.

Yesterday afternoon there was a similar Majors and Advising Fair held for the Sciences, also in Newcomb Plaza.

"The majors fairs are a great opportunity for students interested in learning about fields other than the ones they are taking classes in," Labadie said.

Today the Council is sponsoring a Professor Appreciation Tea in the Colonnade Club, between 2 and 4 p.m. Students are invited to attend and invite a faculty member of their choice.

College Week culminates Friday with the College Carnival held in the Amphitheater from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The Carnival includes free food and drinks, rides, games and even a faculty pet show.

"The faculty dog show is always a big favorite," Labadie said.

Reid encouraged all students to attend College week activities.

"It's a great way for the Arts & Sciences Council to give back a bit to the community that elected us," Reid said.
