Statistics provided by the Housing Office reveal the 181st class of Lawn residents to be your average, above-average group.

Of the residents selected thus far, over three-quarters, 78 percent, come from the College. Seven other residents, about 14 percent, come from the Commerce School, three more are from the Engineering School and the Nursing and Architecture Schools each have one resident. While the selection may seem to favor the College, the numbers generally reflect the percentages of students in each of the respective schools, Dean of Students Penny Rue said.

"The enrollment numbers usually just about mirror the selection," Rue said. "That's one of the reasons we have people on the committee from all the schools."

Demographically, the 2005-2006 Lawn class represents a wide assortment of the University community. Although most students at the University come from Virginia, 53 percent of Lawn residents are out-of-state students. Half of selected students are members of a fraternity or sorority. Sigma Chi fraternity and Pi Beta Phi sorority have the largest representation with three members each. The 2005-2006 class also is 40 percent female, a slight decrease from last year when women made up more than half of Lawn residents.

Every Lawn class is filled with bright and involved fourth-year students, and next year is no exception.

According to Housing statistics, 11 of next year's Lawn residents are Echols Scholars, and one is a Rodman Scholar. The average GPA of the new Lawn residents is a 3.72, with a major GPA of 3.77. Over half the residents are double majors, with the most popular majors being economics, history, English and politics.

Although many of the groups listed under University achievements by the selected students are those traditionally associated with Lawn residents
