Council vote passes I.D. alternatives

At its meeting last night, Student Council passed a bill to implement alternative forms of student identification. Council unanimously passed a total of four pieces of legislation.

Vice President of Administration Greg Jackson, Vice President for Organizations Rebecca Keyworth and College Rep. Ezana Teferra sponsored the resolution to implement alternative forms of student identification. Jackson read the bill into the record last week. He said passing the bill would be the first step in halting the University's use of Social Security numbers as student identification numbers.

Jackson proposed an amendment to broaden the language of the bill, which stated that the bill would approve any measure that increased security and prevented vulnerabilities. Council also unanimously approved the amendment.

"It allows the bill to be more flexible, so if the administration comes up with a different solution, then we will support it," Jackson said.

Council also unanimously passed both a resolution recommending revisions to the online course evaluation data collection procedure and a resolution that would create a reserved student-fan group seating section at home basketball games.

Hoo Crew President Graham Tucker appeared at last night's meeting to discuss the merits of reserved seating at basketball games for the student-fan group. Tucker said reserved seating would be an incentive to join the Hoo Crew. He added that graduate students could be included in the Hoo Crew with all the same benefits as undergraduates.

The Hoo Crew would benefit more than just the Virginia Athletics Association, Tucker said. He said he has encountered several prospective students on tours that apply to Wake Forest University because of their student-fan group, the Screamin' Demons. He said the Screamin' Demons have guaranteed seating at Wake Forest football and basketball games.

Council also unanimously passed a resolution to raise awareness of suicide prevention resources available at the University.
