Farrell, Fralin begin term leading Board of Visitors

In the tradition of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, past rectors of the Board of visitors, outgoing rector Gordon J. Rainey passed the gavel to Thomas Farrell, II last Friday, according to the Daily Progress.

Farrell became the Board's 38th rector, while W. Heywood Fralin was installed as vice-rector. Fralin will be promoted to the rector position in 2007.

Farrell was appointed to the Board by former Gov. James Gilmore in 2001. He is the president and chief executive officer of Dominion Power and currently has two sons enrolled in the College.

Fralin is the chief executive officer of Medical Facilities of America. He was appointed to the Board by Governor Mark R. Warner in 2004. Like Farrell, Fralin also received an undergraduate degree from the University.

In an interview last month, Fralin said that he hopes the University will continue to climb in the rankings of the nation's most elite institutions.

"I think the Board is on a solid course and I think it will continue that way," he said. "The University is on track to continue to be viewed as one of the great Universities of this country."
