Six Corner businesses close doors

When classes resume in the fall, students will find a lot more has changed on the Corner than just the addition of Bodo's -- six stores and restaurants will be closing their doors permanently.

Hoos Greek, a specialty store on 14th Street aimed at fraternity and sorority students, closed last month. According to former owner and manager Laura Futty, the time had come to move on.

"We have a two year old and wanted to start growing a family," Futty said. "My husband travels a lot so something had to give for it to work and that ended up being the store."

Futty decided to close the store after four years when no one expressed interest in buying the business.

The Greek community doesn't have to worry too much, however. Futty says she plans to continue selling merchandise online through the store's Web site.

Another retail establishment on the 14th Street side of the Corner, Trade Roots, plans to close later this month.

"I've enjoyed the journey," store owner Joanna Palmer said. "I like the Corner, and I care about Charlottesville. But I need to get free and clear and retire from here."

The store, which has been open on the Corner for the past six years, originated as a stall on the Downtown Mall. An avid traveler, Palmer featured original art, jewelry and clothing which she bought directly from international artists and imported to her store.

According to a representative from the company which owns the space on the 14th Street side of the Corner, they would like to keep the spots retail. Although there is some interest in the three open properties
