University names Aylor E-school dean

University of Virginia President John T. Casteen, III announced yesterday the promotion of James H. Aylor from interim dean to Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science.

The Engineering School is the second-largest at the University. In addition to a sizeable student body and a faculty of over 200 members, the department plans to open the 99,000-square-foot Wilsdorf Hall for nanoscience and other research this spring. Plans for additional facilities are underway, according to University News Services.

Aylor, who gained his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from the University, said he hopes such improvements will only strengthen the school.

"President [Casteen] feels that science and engineering must be improved at the University of Virginia to maintain our status as a top University," Aylor said. "That's great news for engineering because the University has over the years grown in its liberal arts programs. This is a real opportunity for engineering and the sciences to improve their statue internationally."

Aylor said his goal was to launch the Engineering School into the top 20 nationally, improving upon the current ranking of 34th in the U.S. News & World Report rankings
