The annual activities fair, which was held early last week, drew greater interest for student organizations than in previous years. Various CIO leaders said they expect participation in their organizations to be buoyed by strong interest from incoming students.
Swim Club President Jacek Slowikowski reported a rise in interest compared to last year. Over 80 students signed up for the group's interest list and, "as a whole, everyone seemed very enthusiastic to participate in our organization."
Officers of other types of organizations also speculated that their group will experience increased turnout this year.
"Though the activities fair often draws many people with casual interest, turnout for our first event of the year showed a great amount of genuine interest on behalf of new students," said Shawn Slate, campus minister for Reformed University Fellowship. "The students of U.Va. seem to be very interested in participating in different organizations and activities."
CIOs also observed increased interest outside of the activities fair. Walt McGough, producer for the First Year Players, said that through handing out fliers and tabling, his acting group was able to greatly increase the participation of new students compared to the 2004 school year.
New students found the activities fair to be very informative, though also overwhelming.
"Everything I signed up for sounded really interesting," first-year College student Ellen Merrick said. "Everyone was very enthusiastic about the whole process"
