Honor and UJC to recruit earlier this fall

Both the Honor Committee and the University Judiciary Committee laid out plans to educate the Class of 2009 and recruit new students to their organizations at their respective meetings last night.

Representatives from Honor and UJC spoke to students during summer orientation sessions and participated in a number of events including the Student Activities Fair, the BSA Activities Fair and the Newcomb Hall Crawl.

UJC Senior Educator Sarah Abreu said, "we want to improve awareness of what UJC is and what we do and to give everyone a chance to get involved,"

One of the major goals of both organizations is getting students involved as early as possible. To achieve this end, the UJC has moved support officer recruitment from the spring to the fall.

"This is the first year we have done recruitment for first-year judges and support officers together," Abreu said.

The Honor Committee has moved up the timetable for testing and interviews this year.

"We're trying to get as much training as possible done before the end of the semester," Honor Vice Chair for Trials Stewart Ackerly said.

Both Honor and UJC have thorough selection processes for new members of the organizations. Prospective members undergo tests and multiple interviews.

"Honor is just a group of people, and those people really define what Honor is," Honor Committee Chair David Hobbs said.

Hobbs added that the Honor Committee is looking reach all pockets of the University community with its recruitment.

According to UJC Chair Tim Ormsby, the UJC is looking for students with different skills for its various positions.

"We're looking for people who can maintain a certain level of professionalism, reliability and confidentiality," Ormsby said.

In addition to recruitment, Honor and UJC are planning events to further educate first years, including the Dorm Liaisons Program.

"The Dorm Liaisons Program is an ethics program that focuses on Honor and is run by Honor support officers," Hobbs said.

According to Hobbs, the Honor Committee hopes to get to all of the first-year dorms before midterms begin.

The UJC is also looking to continue to educate students throughout the year.

"Education is one of our big goals this year," UJC Chair Tim Ormsby said. "Some people don't even know what UJC stands for or what it does."

Both Honor and UJC will be holding recruitment information sessions in the coming weeks.
