UPC brings Mraz concert to University in October

Jason Mraz will perform at the University Oct. 14 as part of the University Programs Council's fall line-up.

"I worked throughout the summer with the PK German committee on the artist list for our fall show," UPC's PK German Chair Amir Khoddami said. The PK German Committee is responsible for concert planning within UPC.

The option to have Jason Mraz perform presented itself to UPC, Khoddami said.

"He was routing [through Virginia], which made him more appealing," Khoddami said. "It also seemed advantageous to pursue such a buzz-worthy artist."

Mraz first performed at the University in December 2002, before the release of his first CD, "Waiting for My Rocket to Come."

"It is really exciting for UPC to bring Jason Mraz back to the University three years after the Tuttle Committee [of UPC] hosted him in the Tuttle lounge," Khoddami said. "Now he's a major international artist."

UPC is in the beginning stages of preparing for its fall show, Program Coordinator Travis Hartberger said.

"We're just getting started and trying to get the rest of our committee involved," Hartberger said.

Hartberger added that there are three main subcommittees set up to prepare for the concert -- Production, Promotions/Publicity and Hospitality.

Vice Chair of UPC Kate Daughdrill said the goal of UPC -- a student-run organization -- is to enrich the lives of students through quality programming.

"Last year we brought the Roots and Robert Randall to the University," Daughdrill said. "Now we're excited to bring something different. Jason Mraz is more mainstream with huge name recognition."

The week Mraz's second CD, "Mr. A-Z" was released, it debuted in the top five on Billboard Charts.

Khoddami said two acts will open for Mraz at UPC's fall concert. Raul Midón, one of the two acts, sings a duet with Jason Mraz on "Mr. A-Z."

"Midón is a fusion of Latin R&B and jazz, with some flamenco guitar," Khoddami said.

UPC has yet to determine the second act, Hartberger said.

There will be a one-week student presale on tickets before tickets are available for the general public, Khoddami said.

Prices have yet to be determined, but tickets will be sold to students at a discounted price.

"Our hope is that the event is student-focused, with as many students as possible in attendance," Khoddami said.
