Beta Bridge investigation

A University press release yesterday announced that FBI investigators have determined the graffiti on Beta Bridge reported to Charlottesville and University Police Aug. 29 was not racially motivated.

According to the release, FBI Special Agent James Lamb, who was involved in the investigation, said photos reviewed by the FBI's Civil Right Unit did not "suggest racial implications."

After a group of students reported the offensive images and words painted on Beta Bridge to local police, University President John T. Casteen, III asked the FBI to investigate the incident for racial undertones.

"I am grateful to the many people who worked overtime for several days to resolve what had become a sensitive public issue in our community," Casteen said in the release.

Because of the press release's late circulation, University police could not be contacted for further comment by press time. Please see Monday's Cavalier Daily for further information on the FBI's findings.
