Football ticket demand high

The line stretched from Bryant Hall, through the parking lot and toward the Engineering School. Students pitched tents the night before in order to get the best tickets. At 8:45 a.m. Tuesday the ticket window opened and the deluge of students wanting to buy home football game tickets began.

"We got to Bryant Hall at 8:40 [a.m.] and cut in line with someone who had been there since 8:00 a.m.," second-year College student Jane Baber said. "The line was unbelievably long and snaked all the way inside. When they finally opened the ticket booth, it took us 'two point five' hours to get through it, and there was still an even longer line inside."

Virginia Tech tickets were the first to go, according to Ticket Office manager Dick Mathias.

"We had about 500 left going into Wednesday," Mathias said. "They were gone by late morning."

As of yesterday afternoon, there remained about 2,000 tickets for the Duke game, 700 for the Florida State game, 2,700 for the Temple game and 2,200 for the Georgia Tech game, Mathias said.

"Of all the opponents, Virginia Tech brings out the most interests from our students, with Florida State not too far behind," he said.

Third-year College student Andres Gil said he went to purchase tickets to the Virginia Tech and Florida State games.

"I got there around 11:30 [a.m.] and actually ended up waiting only an hour because a friend of mine got there at 9 [a.m.]," Gil said.

Both Gil and Baber questioned the efficiency of the ticket-purchasing system in place.

"I think it was a bad call to have the FSU and the Tech tickets go on sale on the same day," Baber said.

Gil suggested that the athletics department could consider implementing an online ticket registry or a lottery system.

"I think that would be more efficient than having student miss classes to get football tickets," Gil said.

Even though he said he finds flaws with the system, however, Gil said he will get tickets again next year. "I might send someone else to do it for me, but I think I'll probably get tickets," he said.
