Faculty face confusion, limited options

In light of recent cases of cheating, it appears that some professors choose to opt out of the honor system in dealing with possible honor offenses. In bypassing the system, professors could be in violation of University policies or federal law.

University policies limit professors to use of the honor system or the faculty grading option. Meanwhile, federal law prevents professors from avoiding participation in the honor system by convincing other students to file honor charges.

Faculty policies on the University's Office of the Vice President and Provost Web site indicate "a faculty member who suspects an honor offense has occurred should contact an Honor advisor or the Honor Committee representative elected from their particular school
