University Police Chief Paul E. Norris, Jr. has resigned from his post at the University Police Department. His resignation will take effect Oct. 25.
Norris said he will take the position of chief of police at the Indianapolis campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Nov. 1st.
"He will be greatly missed," University Police Capt. Michael Coleman said. "He has worked to increase the well-being of the [University police] officers."
Norris, who has served as chief of police at the University since Aug. 1, 2001, says he is moving to Indianapolis for family reasons.
"Most of my family lives in Indiana," he said.
According to University Relations, Norris began his career in law enforcement at Indiana University in 1970 and served as the chief of police of Indiana University's Bloomington campus before coming to the University.
"This is a wonderful move for [Norris]," University spokesperson Carol Wood said. "It's clear that he is going home."
While serving as chief of police for the University, Norris received an Educational Mentor and Manager Award because of his efforts to foster the education of members of the University Police Department.
"He has had a strong emphasis on education in his own ranks," Wood said.
Norris also has worked to maintain the strong relations between the University Police Department and various groups around the University, including the students, faculty and administration, and in addition to maintaining relations with the Charlottesville Police, Wood said.
"He has continued in the legacy that the University has in believing that these are important relationships," she said.
An interim officer will be appointed to serve as chief of police in Norris' absence while a committee is formed to conduct a national search for an official replacement, Wood said.
The committee likely will resemble the committee that selected Norris four years ago in that it will consist of members of University students, faculty and administration, Wood said.
The individual who is to serve as interim chief of police and the members of the committee assigned to research candidates for the position have not been selected, Wood said.
