Council reflects on semester's achievements

With just one meeting left in the semester, Student Council members reflected on their semester as student representatives.

Engineering Rep. Pavan Gupta said Council's effort to deal with acts of intolerance was one of its best initiatives.

"One of the biggest things we did as an overall representative body was creating the ad hoc committee to deal with acts of intolerance," Gupta said.

Gupta added that College Rep. Tom Gibson's project establishing a memorial for students who died while attending the University was another important initiative.

Gibson's project "seems like a small thing, but it's important to memorialize students who have passed," Gupta said. "It's the small things together that impact the student body most."

Gupta said he thinks Council has been successful with its smaller projects as well and that he expects Council to continue their efforts next semester.

Council Executive Vice President Darius Nabors said the Appropriations Committee was successful this semester.

"One of the big measures was the rolling appropriations process and making student money more available to student groups," Nabors said.

He added that the new computer technology accessibility to students in Newcomb Hall also was a major piece of legislation for Council this semester.

Graduate Student Rep. Gavin Reddick said he agreed that technology availability was important.

"It is now free for students to use the overhead projector, computer equipment and all the technology at Newcomb," Reddick said. "Now students can use it this semester or next semester for free."

Vice President for Administration Okey Udumaga said Council came into the semester with goals and that Council members accomplished what they set out to do.

"We came in with an agenda set," Udumaga said. "As of last spring we met and developed a game plan on what we could do to help Student Council and the student body in general."

Udumaga said internal reorganization and restructuring were key parts of Council's agenda.

"Legitimacy is a big thing," he said. "We wanted to re-establish legitimacy in the eyes of every student."

Udumaga said he thinks Council has been successful overall this semester.

"I think we have changed a lot of things," he said. "Students will feel the effects of our efficiency soon."

Nabors said next semester Council needs to work on reaching out to students.

"Next semester we also need to let students know what we do and that we can make their wildest dreams come true," Nabors said. "Not every student wants to be on Student Council but Student Council can help every student."
