Police arrest, issue summons for alcohol-related incidents

In a rash of alcohol-related arrests, the University Police arrested one male first-year student and issued summons to three other University students on grounds Monday night.

University Police Captain Mike Coleman said officers arrested the first-year student on Emmett Street for underage possession of alcohol.

"This was one incident of underage possession," Coleman said. "It was a custodial arrest, meaning he was picked up and taken to jail."

Coleman said officers stopped the student because he appeared to have difficulty walking.

"The fellow was on Emmett Street, and he was having difficulty maintaining his balance, so the officer of investigation approached him," Coleman said. "After the investigation, he made an arrest for underage possession for the alcohol that the student consumed previously."

He added that the student was then taken to the police complex.

University police issued three summonses on grounds to three students they could not identify by name because the police have not yet officially identified the students.

Dean of Student Affairs and Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life Aaron Laushway said that he sent an e-mail to all fraternity presidents in the Inter-Fraternity Council regarding the Monday night arrests of first-year students participating in fraternity rush.

The e-mail stated that six first-year males were involved in alcohol-related incidents, and two of these students spent the night in jail. One student involved needed medical attention, and three of these students were charged with alcohol possession, possession of marijuana and possession of false identification.

According to Laushway's e-mail, all six students were involved in fraternity rush activities.

Coleman added that he could not confirm the students he reported arrested or summoned were involved in fraternity rush. Coleman said that he could not confirm a correlation between the incidents he reported and the incidents reported in Laushway's e-mail.

IFC President Ross Kimbel said he could not comment specifically on the alleged events, but he said the IFC will take whatever measures are necessary to deal with issue.

"The IFC is processing and hearing cases of alleged fraternity misconduct as quickly and efficiently as possible," Kimbel said. "The corrective action can be taken in response to rush violations."

Kimbel said the safety of the first-year students involved in fraternity rush is important to the IFC.

"The safety and security of first-year men and others rushing IFC fraternities is of the utmost importance to the IFC and ensuring that safety is a top priority," he said.

Dean on Call Clarybel Peguero said University administrators and officials are investigating Monday night's incidents mentioned in Laushway's e-mail.

"As dean on call, we are required to deal with situations that come up while we're on call," Peguero said. "We meet with students accordingly. We need to meet with students to see if alleged activities did occur."

Peguero said she estimated she received notification of the incidents some time after midnight.
