UPC officially transitions new executive board

The new executive board of University Programs Council was officially transitioned into their new positions yesterday morning.

According to the press release, UPC's executive board initiated second-year College student Brian Gavron as its new chair, second-year College student Lauren Tilton as vice chair, second-year College student Krystal Lott as marketing and promotions chair, and second-year college student Mai Hassan as membership chair.

UPC is an organization that directs programming for all students, said Lauren Tilton, the new vice chair for UPC.

"It's a programming council and all the student fees you pay at admission, about $14, go to the council," Tilton said. "It includes undergrads and grads--all students at the University."

UPC oversees nine different program groups including Artspace, Cinemateque and PK German, explained Tilton.

Candidates for the positions filled out applications, which were due the week after winter break, in addition to making appointments with the UPC selections committee about ten days after returning, Hassan said.

"We found out the next day [after the interviews]," Lott said.

The seven-person selections committee included members from previous executive councils, the EVP for Student Council, Daisy Hutcherson from the Office of the Dean of Students and a co-chair from resident life, explained Hassan.

"We wanted them to not be chosen just by UPC," Lott said. "We want to make sure that we fit [the students'] programming needs and that they fit with U.Va. and UPC's core purpose and vision."

Yesterday's meeting brought together the current year's board and the new board for the first time, Tilton said.

"It was great because we got to see experience at hand," Tilton said. "It gives us a framework for what we should be working to."

This year's executive board for UPC hopes to bring even more exciting programs to the University in the future, Tilton said.

We're bringing "a lot of exciting programs--of course Tom Deluca in the fall," Tilton said. "Keep an eye out for it."
