Monday marked the beginning of the University studio art students' personal exhibitions on the Downtown Mall, University Art Prof. William Bennett said.
These exhibitions are the culmination of year-long projects by the art department's Distinguished Major Program students and the department's fifth-year Aunspaugh Fellows, University Art Prof. Dean Dass said.
A new group of students will hold receptions for their final projects at the Off Grounds art gallery every Friday until May 5, Dass said.
The fifth-year students will hold their exhibitions April 7 and May 5 in order to take advantage of Charlottesville's First Fridays, when all of the city's galleries open their doors to the public.
Allowing the students to exhibit downtown allows them to benefit from Charlottesville's vibrant art scene, fifth-year College student Erin Tabolt said.
Along with the receptions, each of the student artists will give an artist's talk about their work because part of the premise is to get the students to write and talk about their art, Dass said.
Along with the art, students must write a thesis that shows they have done research into 20th century art and can clearly articulate their influences, Dass added.
Fifth-year College student Patrick Edmunds said this project puts an emphasis on the logistics of running and hanging an exhibit that students do not normally get.
The project "provides a lot of opportunity to come full circle with the artistic process," Edmunds said.
Dass added that the students' work is done in a variety of media.
"Every person has a specialty -- the shows will cut across art disciplines," he said.
Along with the Distinguished Majors students and fifth-year fellows, the other fourth-year studio art students also will have shows this month, Dass said.
In total there are about 30 exhibits occurring on and off Grounds, Dass added.
