Greek councils host awards ceremony

Yesterday at the Bayly Art Museum, members of the four University Greek councils came together to host the annual Greek Awards Ceremony.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inter-Fraternity Council, Inter-Sorority Council, and the Multicultural Greek Council all sent representatives from various chapters to the ceremony.

Assistant Dean of Students Clarybel Peguero was the keynote speaker, and focused on the positive aspects of the Greek community.

"A lot of the time, when you hear about the Greek community, the focus can be negative. This ceremony is a chance to focus on the positive aspects of the Greek community," Peguero noted in her speech.

The awards given included Outstanding Contribution to the University, won by Tyrone Jean, Kendall Fox, Jessica Fowler and Ross Baird. The Outstanding Chapter award was given to Chi Omega, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Phi Delta Theta, and Theta Nu Xi.

Other awards were given to the Most Improved Chapter, Alpha Delta Pi, Theta Chi, and Zeta Phi Beta, and Outstanding Chapter Presidents, Octavia Donnelly, Alicia Hines, Jennifer Thomas and Steve Driskill. 12 total awards were given.

"We've worked really hard, and this award noting our achievements is an affirmation that our hard work has not gone unrecognized," second-year Architecture student Brian Poulson, Vice-President of Phi Delta Theta, said.

A meeting between the four Greek councils at the University is rare, but a positive experience, notes Peguero, who won an award recognizing the dean as the Outstanding Chapter Advisor in the Greek system.

"The entire Greek community comes together for events such as Habitat for Humanity and Greek Week, but an event like this can also bring great recognition to the Greek community in a positive way," added Peguero.

Third-year College student Layton Hill, public relations representative for the Inter-Fraternity Council, echoed Peguero's thoughts on the overall positive outcome of the awards ceremony.

"The Greek community receives a lot of publicity, and negative publicity is much easier to come by," Hill said. "An event like this can be used to showcase out achievements to the community."
