Occupants of next year's seven endowed Lawn rooms selected

The residents of the endowed Lawn rooms have been selected for 2006-2007,Lawn Head Resident Jennifer Allen said.

Seven of the 54 Lawn rooms are not filled in the regular selection process and have been designated to particular organizations, Allen said. Five of the endowed rooms are reserved for members of the Jefferson Literary and Debating Society, Trigon Engineering Society, Kappa Sigma fraternity, Residence Life and the Honor Committee. The remaining two rooms -- the John-Kenneth Crispell Room and the Gus Blagden Room -- are known as the "Pre-Med" and "Good Guy" rooms, respectively.

"All of the endowed rooms fall under the auspices" of the vice president for student affairs, Allen said.

The Blagden Room at 15 West Lawn, occupied next year by Rita Lahlou, was endowed by the Scott family in honor of an alumnus of the University who passed away in 1969, Lahlou said.

"I'm so honored to be the recipient of the room," Lahlou said. "I had no idea, but I'm really excited."

The resident of the Blagden room is chosen based on strong character traits and time dedicated to the University, and is selected by a special committee, Allen said.

"I think that the character traits embodied by the Gus Blagden room residents are ones that our [Lawn] residents should live up to," Allen said.

According to next year's Room 7 resident, Kristen Smith, the Jefferson Literary and Debating Society was founded in Lawn Room 7, and the room's resident is one of the two most important officers in the Society. The room's resident and the president of the Society are the only officers to serve for one year, Smith said. The resident is chosen by the Society through an application process and a closed vote, and is responsible for handling the Society's endowment and hosting the Society in the room during meetings and social events, among other duties.

Alison Tramba will be the next resident of Lawn Room 37, the "Honor" room. Tramba said the room is typically reserved for the chair of the Honor Committee and provides a place outside Newcomb Hall to be associated with the Committee.

Matthew Deasey, a neuroscience student, will occupy the John Kenneth Crispell room at 1 West Lawn. Allen said the room is not necessarily given to a pre-med student, despite its being referred to as the "pre-med" room.

Nathan Hurst has been selected to live in the Trigon Engineering Society room at 17 West Lawn. Thomas Holman will serve as head Resident of the Lawn and will occupy Room 26, the residence Life room. Andrew Cardwell has been chosen to live in Room 46, the Kappa Sigma fraternity room.
