Pearlstone investigations closes, death ruled accidental; two University students charged with alcohol-related misdemeanors stemming from investigation The death of Cornell University freshman Mathew Pearlstone, who died while visiting the University last semester, is no longer under investigation by police, according to University Police Department Capt. Michael Coleman. The case was closed after the medical examiner determined Pearlstone's death to be accidental, Coleman added.
During the investigation, evidence was found to indicate that two University students had committed alcohol offenses in violation of Virginia Code. Nicole Kiffe, a rising fourth year in the Commerce School, was charged with purchasing alcohol for a person who was not 21 years of age, according to a University Police press release. Benjamin Nowak, a rising third year College student, was charged with possession of alcohol while he was not 21 years of age, according to the same press release. Both students were arrested on May 10 and appeared in court on May 12. Their next scheduled court date is June 19.
Coleman confirmed that the charges pending against both Kiffe and Nowak stem from violations that occurred on the night before Pearlstone's death. In addition, Coleman said it is believed Pearlstone was at a residence where the alcohol in question was present, but it is unknown weather he consumed any of this alcohol. However, Coleman stressed that the two arrests were not considered to be connected with Pearlstone's death.
