Diplomat Scholar Robinson, 63, passes away

University students and faculty are mourning the loss of Leonard Robinson, the University's first Diplomat Scholar and an expert in the field of African affairs. After dedicating his life to advancing the interests of Africans through US foreign relations, Robinson died last Tuesday at age 63.

At the University, Robinson will be best remembered for his service as a Diplomat-Scholar, a designation that allowed him to begin the Ambassador's Lecture series and bring foreign dignitaries and officials to the University in an effort to educate students interested in international affairs. Robinson also founded the International Career Workshop, which allowed for more interaction between diplomats and students, and taught a seminar, "The Politics of Southern Africa."

Robinson's time at the University culminated a career spanning more than thirty years. A former Peace Corps volunteer, Robinson served as deputy secretary of state for African-American Affairs, deputy assistant secretary of state, president of the U.S. African Development Foundation, president of the National Summit on Africa, and president and CEO of the Africa Society.
