Cavaliers take three over weekend

The Virginia wrestling squad continued to gain momentum heading into their ACC regular season schedule with three victories last weekend in North Carolina.

The Cavaliers began the weekend Saturday against Appalachian State, winning seven of 10 matches on their way to a 24-10 victory. Virginia's 11-3 record in dual meets is one win shy of the school's dual-win season record.

Freshman Nick Nelson, sophomore Ross Gitomer and junior Rocco Caponi all earned major decisions, at 141, 125 and 184 pounds, respectively, to lead the Cavaliers.

Virginia nearly swept its second meet Sunday against Davidson 45-4, winning all but one weight class. The Cavaliers recorded three falls against the Wildcats, from Nelson, Caponi and freshman Shawn Harris at 149 pounds.

The last meet of the weekend pitted the Cavaliers against a perennial contender, UNC Greensboro. Virginia lost its first two matches by pin and fell behind 0-12. The Cavaliers surged back to win six of the next eight and take the meet 24-18.

Freshman Chris Henrich won by fall at 149 pounds, and Caponi recorded his second pin of the day. Redshirt sophomore Brent Jones provided the decisive win of the day, a 13-7 decision, earning his second victory over No. 11 Daren Burns in as many matches.

The Cavaliers next wrestle against North Carolina Friday January 25 at Memorial Gymnasium.
