The Lighting of the Lawn Committee’s announcement that the Lawn will be decorated this year with low-energy LED lights, rather than the traditional incandescent bulbs, is another step the University has taken this year toward greater environmental sustainability. We are happy to see the committee taking this initiative and setting a good example for the community.
The Lighting of the Lawn tradition is only a few years old, but it has quickly become one of the most popular annual events on Grounds. But it doesn’t take an environmental activist to note the event celebrates the University essentially leaving the lights on for a month.
So even though the new lights may not look quite the same, the committee was right to use such a public event to affirm the University community’s commitment to sustainability. We hope that commitment remains more than just a façade.
