The editorial last Thursday (“Food for Thought,” 2/19/2009) should be commended for supporting the efforts of the new student group Campus Kitchens. However, the subsequent recommendation that the group should distribute the food to cafeteria workers was deeply troubling and highly offensive. It is true that the ARAMARK workers who staff our cafeterias do not make enough to afford to raise their families, often having to choose between food and other essentials. However, the answer to this deeply troubling problem is not to provide workers with our waste and treat it like charity. The idea that those who serve us food should then consume our leftovers is not only disgraceful but also highly dishonorable. The answer is not to provide workers with student leftovers, but rather to pay our workers an adequate wage with which to support their families. It is truly shameful that those who serve us food cannot afford to feed their own children. However, it is even more shameful to believe that the solution to this problem lies in charitably giving them our leftovers. Students concerned about the economic situation of ARAMARK employees should fight for the dignity of adequate pay, not the degradation of charitable leftovers.
