The Virginia men's lacrosse team will host a 7-on-7 flag football tournament at Lambeth Field this Saturday in remembrance of former Virginia lacrosse player Will Barrow, who took his own life last November.

"Off the field Will was ... extraordinary," senior midfielder Max Pomper said. "He was an incredibly kind person with a warm heart and infectious smile."

Each team participating must pay a $150 entrance fee and all funds raised from the event will go toward the University's student-run crisis hotline. HELP Line is a 24-hour anonymous telephone service available to students and Charlottesville and Albemarle County residents.

Barrow played midfield on the Cavaliers' 2006 national championship team and went on to become captain of the 2008 squad, which advanced to the Final Four. As one of the top defensive players in the country, he was drafted in the second round of the Major League Lacrosse draft at the end of the 2008 season and appeared in five games for the Chicago Machine.

"If you were lucky enough to have met Will or have played with Will, I am sure he was able to touch your life in a positive way," Pomper said.

The flag football tournament, which will run from noon to 4 p.m., will also include a barbecue and raffle. More than 300 people are expected to participate in the event, and among the 20 teams already registered are varsity squads from North Carolina, Johns Hopkins and Georgetown. Several Virginia lacrosse alumni also will make appearances.
