The cross country season starts Friday with the Lou Onesty Open, the first of three meets Virginia will host this year at Panorama Farms.
Historically, the Cavaliers have dominated the meet, which tends to be fairly small, as only four teams competed last year. Both the men's and women's teams have finished in first place two years running, and on the men's side, a Cavalier has won the title for three consecutive years.
Last year, that individual title went to senior All-American Emil Heineking. Not only did Heineking win the race by 56 seconds, but he also set a meet record of 24:04.8 on the 8-kilometer course.
Junior runners Sean Keveren, Andrew Revelle and Sintayehu Taye also finished in the top 10 last year. The squad finished with 28 points, 30 ahead of its closest competitor, Norfolk State.
The women were even more dominant. With eight runners finishing in the top 15, the squad finished 48 points ahead of the runner-up, UNC-Greensboro. Senior Stephanie Garcia, last year's individual runner-up, returns this year along with three of her fellow top 10 finishers, juniors Laurel MacMillan, Chelsea France and Anna Corrigan.
The men's race begins at 5:30 p.m. and the women's race starts at 6:15 p.m.
