Boats race past tough opposition

Three of the Virginia women's rowing team's five Varsity Eight crews finished in the top five at the Princeton Chase on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J. Sunday.\nPrinceton's top boat edged Virginia for the second consecutive meet, finishing the race with a time of 14:22.518 - more than nine seconds ahead of Virginia's 'A' boat.

Forty-five boats competed in the Varsity Eight race, including crews from Ivy League schools such as Dartmouth, Brown and Cornell, as well as northeastern schools such as Boston and Rhode Island.

Virginia's other boats finished fourth, fifth, 16th and 27th.

In the Novice Eight race, Virginia took first place and finished ahead of runner-up Pennsylvania by nearly a minute.

Virginia will race next on the Rivanna Reservoir in Charlottesville Nov. 14 to conclude fall competition.
