Future holds hologram messaging

Researchers at the University of Arizona have created a system that is capable of displaying holographic images between locations in real-time. These images are viewable from all sides and can be used by car or airplane manufacturers to look at current 3-D models and make changes to them.

The holographic system contains a plastic screen material that records the 3-D images, created from many views from different cameras, every two seconds. Sixteen cameras are used to record 2-D objects from multiple angles. These images are then sent to another location to print the visual information onto a photosensitive polymer.

The system has the potential to be applied in both entertainment and in the military. Still, researchers note that improvements are still needed, including the ability to re-print the photosensitive polymer at least 30 times a second. The images also must be made larger and with higher resolutions.
