Cavs earn rare win at Carolina

The Virginia wrestling team continued its strong start in ACC play Friday with a 28-6 victory against North Carolina. The Cavaliers took eight of the 10 matches en route to their first victory at Chapel Hill since 2003.

Sophomore Matt Snyder gave Virginia (14-5, 2-0 ACC) an early six-point lead as he scored a takedown and pin midway through the first period of the 125-pound match, improving his record to 17-6 for the year. Senior Chris Henrich was the only other Cavalier to earn a bonus point win, as he dominated his way to a 14-3 major decision at 174 pounds. Henrich, who holds Virginia's all-time win record, notched his 124th career victory and now boasts a 23-1 record on the season.

Tar Heel freshman Corey Mock, who was named ACC Wrestler of the Week last week, narrowed the Cavalier lead to 12-6 with a victory at 157 pounds, but sophomore Jedd Moore, in just his third match of the season, reclaimed Virginia's momentum with a hard-fought 7-2 triumph in the 165-pound match. The Cavaliers went on to win decisions in each of the final five weight classes, thwarting all hopes of a Tar Heel comeback.

Virginia will return home to Memorial Gymnasium next weekend for a pair of non-conference duals, Friday at 6 p.m. against No. 8 Rutgers and Saturday at 1 p.m. against Princeton.
