One game after struggling to generate a sustained offensive attack against a stout Loyola defense, the No. 12 Virginia women's lacrosse team had little trouble finding the back of the net in a 23-13 triumph at Richmond. Five Cavaliers recorded hat tricks and 10 different players scored goals as Virginia (1-1) picked up its first win of the season against a Spiders team that has now given up a total of 75 goals in four consecutive losses.
The 23-goal output marked the largest during coach Julie Myers' tenure and the most Virginia has scored since 1987. Junior attacker Josie Owen put up the biggest numbers with four goals and three assists to her credit. Junior attacker Charlie Finnigan matched Owen with four goals of her own. Junior midfielder Julie Gardner, redshirt junior attacker Ainsley Baker and sophomore midfielder Anne Thomas scored three goals apiece in the victory. Gardner also tallied three assists on the night.\nFreshman midfielder Maddy Keeshan collected her first career point with a goal early in the first half as the Cavaliers raced to an 17-6 halftime lead.
The Cavaliers conclude their three game road stint at No. 8 Syracuse Sunday.
